SYSTEM OF A DOWN Guitarist Wants SCARS ON BROADWAY To 'Have Its Own Identity'
January 15, 2008SYSTEM OF A DOWN guitarist Daron Malakian has told Revolver magazine that the debut album from his SCARS ON BROADWAY project — which also features SYSTEM drummer John Dolmayan — promises to explore the same thematic and sonic territory as SYSTEM while pushing into new terrain as well.
"The way SYSTEM sounds is my signature," Malakian says proudly, "and I don't want to completely run away from that, because I like it. It's where I'm comfortable. But at the same time, we want this to have its own identity, which I think it will. I'm not writing the same songs now as I did two years ago. And when you listen to 'Mezmerize' and 'Hypnotize', they're different from 'Toxicity'. I can't repeat myself."
SYSTEM OF A DOWN singer Serj Tankian's solo debut, "Elect the Dead", sold 66,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 4 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD was the first new release from a member of SYSTEM OF A DOWN since the band went on hiatus in the fall of 2006.
Although Tankian played most of the instruments on the record himself, SYSTEM OF A DOWN drummer John Dolmayan contributed to a few songs.
